Comparing and Ordering Negative and Positive Numbers

7th graders your post for Tuesday, Feb. 14th, 2012 is question E2 from the CMP Accentuate the Negative problem 1.2:  How does a number line help you to find the smaller value of two numbers?  For example 3 or -7.

  1. Yes it would be good using a number line because it shows 2 sides on the line left is negative and right is positive and the middle is both or zero

  2. Positive numbers is always gonna be greater then negative numbers. for example: -5___3 TAA DAA!!

    1. How do you know where the negative numbers belong on a number line? Where are they in relation to zero?

    2. because the negative numbers always go on the left side of the number line.In mathematics, zero is considered to be unsigned, in that it isn't positive or negative. (OHITIKA)

    3. That is true Devan. Zero is neither negative or positive. Negatives are on the left because they are less than zero.

    On the left side | On the right side
    of the zero is | of the zero is greater than
    least | the left side of the zero

  12. Since the numbers on a number line increase from left to right, it follows that any number to the left of another number is smaller than that other number
