Puzzling...

Your post for today is to find at least one thing that you still find puzzling and post about it.  You can ask a question, give an example, or find another way to describe it.  Make sure that you are VERY clear about what you are puzzled about so I can help you through a reply post.

  1. Why is -1 1/2 not on the number line?

    1. -1 1/2 is always on a number line between -1 and -2. It might not be marked, so if you need it, put it in. Number lines usually show only whole numbers (well the number lines we see most like the one on our wall). There is an infinite amount of numbers on a number line, you just may need to add them.

    1. Check my response to Marky's post. See if that helps you out.

  3. how do you get 1/3 on the number line?

  4. Well first you have to decide where it should go. Do this by asking yourself what numbers 1/3 is between. In this case 1/3 is greater than zero but less than 1. Next, cut the space into the number of pieces in the denominator (in this case 3 pieces). The end of the first mark will show you where 1/3 will go.

    1. Devan- I have no idea why there aren't negative negatives. I would just guess that mathematicians have no use for them so we don't have them. A negative multiplied by a negative is a positive...so maybe a negative negative is really a positive.

  8. I kinda dont get how to find the change in temperature. ?

    1. Number lines really help me (especially those with zero labeled on it). I can look at what temperature I'm starting at and see how far that point is from zero (either rising or falling) and then I can find the distance from zero to where I'm ending. Then all I have to do is combine the two differences (rising is +; falling is -).
